Global Polyol Market Overview

Polyols are molecular compounds, with multiple hydroxyl functional groups attached to different carbon atoms, available for organic reactions. There are majorly two types of Polyols, Polyether Polyol and Polyester Polyol. Both are used to make rigid and flexible polyurethanes.

Global Polyol market size will increase US$ 17 billion from 2018 to US$ 21 billion in 2023, at a CAGR of 4.5% during the forecast period.

Polyether Polyols have lower viscosity at the same temperatures than polyester polyols. Polyurethanes produced with the help of polyester polyols are more heat stable than those produced with the help of polyether polyols. Polyester Polyols are easily attacked by moisture and broken down. They are good for shock absorbers and are used in vibration dampening applications. They have good tensile properties and abrasion resistance as compared to polyether polyols.

Entire Polyol is consumed for the manufacture of polyurethane (PU) foam. Polyurethane foam is further used in mattresses, shoe soles, automobiles, industrial insulation, furniture, etc.

Europe is the largest producing region of Polyol while Indian Sub-continent is the smallest producing region. On the other hand, China is the largest consuming region while South America is the smallest consuming region.

Dow Chemical Company is the largest manufacturer of Polyol. Other major players are Covestro, BASF, Shell Chemicals, Huntsman, Bayer, Wanhua Chemical, Shangdon Dongda Chemical, etc.
